Crabbing for Crabs

Siena's new favorite thing to do at the beach is digging for crabs. She used to just want to chase them, the rare occasion she saw one, into the sea. Finally she saw one dart in it's little crab hole and ever since she's been digging at every crab hole she sees. Here is a picture of the white sand crabs she is after.

So here is what she does. She stands in the water (or is held by one of us) watching, waiting for the crabs to get comfortable and come out of the their holes. Then she sprints up to the beach.

And proceeds to dig . . .

And dig . . . she is very persistent.

On a few lucky occasions she has brilliantly pulled one out. Here is the final face-off.

And that is where the story ends. She doesn't do anything but look, bark and paw as the crab plays dead. She has tried to put them in her mouth but I think the pinchers have taught her that is a bad idea. She just wants to watch them move, bark in excitement, and maybe chase them if she ever had the chance. Whatever makes her happy.

Taco Flavored Thanksgiving

Two tacos, a burrito, and a soda pop! (name that show) Thanksgiving for us consisted of watching Love Actually (Bob played on the computer) and eating soft tacos. Yum!

We hope you all have had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you have a safe holiday weekend. Bob had to work Thursday and Friday (Again, Thanksgiving is not a holiday in Cayman) and we are going to have a chill weekend. No Black Friday sales here, so no Christmas shopping to worry about this year either. Maybe online . . . a little anthropologie.com never hurt anyone :)

PS. Can you name the show? Bob and I saw that episode a few weeks ago and agreed we will never think of Jennifer Lopez the same again. Actually, if I ever met her I'd probably make my hand into a little person and sing "Ben, I love you almost as much as I love tacos" or "Taco Flavored Kisses".

American Thanksgiving in Grand Cayman

This past Saturday Bob and I had 13 of our friends over for Thanksgiving dinner and college football watching (KU vs Texas was actually on our local ABC! Too bad we didn't pull off the upset). Special thanks to Grandma Mason for all the recipes and pointers. Everyone enjoyed the food!

Here is a picture of my 12.5 lb turkey. I also did a 5.8 lb turkey breast (on the bone) for additional white meat. I'm not sure why everyone complains so much about cooking turkeys, it really wasn't difficult. I guess the only issue was oven space.

Here is the spread. Not as much food as Grandma makes, but enough to feed 15 people! Many people took home extra plates and so we actually are finished with the leftovers! It must be some kind of thanksgiving record!

Apparently pumpkin pie is not a popular dish worldwide. I still have a whole one in my fridge. Good thing I love it!

Thursday is going to be like any other day here. My good tv shows are on (community, Office, 30 Rock) and I think we will have tacos for dinner. There are a few restaurants doing turkey dinners but they are all kinda expensive and probably will be filled with tourists. Oh well. Christmas is coming soon and the island is getting decorated. There are lights up along the bypass and downtown, as well as on many of the homes. At least we all celebrate Christmas!

It's Pirate's Week!

Pirate's Week 2009 started this Thursday and runs through next Sunday. It is mostly a national celebration of Cayman and it's people. Each day next week honors the different districts on Grand Cayman and has little block parties. The festivities officially kicked off on Saturday with the pirates invasion of George Town. We went on a boat trip to watch the invasion from the seas.

We had a pretty good time. Everyone on the boat was dressed as a pirate, which was cool. The boat was really rocky at times and I felt kinda sick for about half of the time, which was not cool.

Anyway, here are some pictures from the boat :) Enjoy!

4 day weekend

Tomorrow is DAY 1 of Bob's 4 day weekend. It is actually a national holiday for this year only called "Commencement Day". They are declaring a new constitution or changes to the constitution or something like that. I don't really understand this island's government. I know that the Queen has to sign off on everything, but I doubt she even looks at what they are doing here.

Anyway, you can learn more about Cayman Commencement Day through this article

http://www.caymannetnews.com/local.php?news_id=19132&start=0&category_id=1

and www.constitution.gov.ky

To us, this means a day of fun and sun at the beach with friends (as long as the weather agrees).

Time change

Cayman doesn't observe Daylight Savings, so we are now in line with Eastern Standard Time. Keep that in mind you Central Time Zoners, we are an hour ahead of you now :)

I'm glad we are in line with EST now. Our tv signal comes from Miami and the timing being off was a little annoying. The 10 o'clock news was on at 9 pm and the Today show was over by 10 am. It will stink having to stay up later to watch our tv shows. Last night it felt like forever waiting the new Dexter to come on!

Halloween at the rugby club.

As predicted, I successfully avoided Halloween. Here we are at the rugby club. I guess if you were being picky you could say we were South Africans for Halloween. We ate biltong, cheered on the SA team and drank beer. Good times :)
